What Our Psychologists Do

At Ark Allied Care our Psychologists collaborate with participants, their families, and support networks to develop tailored intervention plans that align with NDIS goals. Together we will work with you on enhancing your adaptive coping skills, social interactions, and overall well-being.

Psychology Services and NDIS

Some people with a ‘psychosocial’ disability are eligible to receive services through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). A psychosocial disability arises when someone with a mental health condition interacts with a social environment that presents barriers to their equality with others. People living with this kind of disability often benefit from regular or ongoing mental health treatment services.

Therapeutic Approaches

After initial consultation and assessment, your Psychologist will recommend a treatment plan in accordance with the goals set out in your NDIS plan. This can include treatment approaches such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Motivational Interviewing

Psychological Services for Children

Depending on the age of the child our Psychologist may work directly one-on-one with a child; similar to how they work with adults. When supporting younger children Psychologists may undertake the majority of their work with the important people in the child’s life (like parents, educators and Support Workers). They may also take a more indirect approach to therapy such as using play, music or art. Indirect approaches can allow those who are still developing their language, self-reflection and/or self-regulation to express and process challenges.

    NDIS Funding

If you have a current NDIS plan with approved funding for ‘Improved  Relationships’ under your capacity building supports category, you may be eligible to access a range of our supports, including behavioural support and assistance with social and community participation.

    What is Improved Relationships?

Out of the three primary categories in an NDIS plan, Improved Relationships falls under the Capacity Building category. This sub-category is used to allocate funding specifically to be used to help you develop positive behaviours and interact with others.

Funds for Improved Relationships are most commonly put towards Behavioural Therapy services, which help you build your capacity through structured behaviour development plans, regular social support and other activities.

How do I get funding for Improved Relationships?

If you’re about to apply for an NDIS plan or your existing plan is about to be renewed, it’s important to compile as much information as possible. To access capacity building and improved relationships funding, it’s important that you can accurately describe how you feel on a daily basis, how these feelings may affect your behaviour and what you believe could help improve your daily life.

If you’re taking medication (i.e. anti-depressants) to help you manage your emotions, it’s a good idea to have your GP (General Practitioner) write a letter outlining your symptoms and any existing supports.

If you’re already seeing a therapist or counsellor, it may also be a good idea to ask them for a written letter of recommendation to the NDIS to ensure you can build an evidenced case for funding support in your next meeting.
