Behaviour Support

Ark Allied Care

Behaviour Support

Our Behaviour Support practitioners use positive individualised strategies for people with a disability who are engaging in challenging behaviours (also known as behaviours of concern). We focus on evidence-based strategies and person-centred supports that address the needs of the person with a disability and the underlying causes of behaviours of concerns, while safeguarding the dignity and quality of life.

Many children, adolescents, and adults—particularly those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual and physical disabilities, express their conscious and subconscious thoughts and feelings through their behaviour. Sometimes these behaviours place either themselves or others at risk, or can negatively impact on their overall life experience. Our Behaviour Support practitioners work with the participant and those around them to develop an individualised plan that aims to reduce or eliminate behaviours of concern whilst helping the person develop the skills they require in order to have their needs met.

What Our Behaviour Support Practitioner Do

At Ark Allied Care our Behaviour Support Practitioners are dedicated to understanding and eliminating or reducing challenging behaviours so that individuals get reach their full potential.

What are Challenging Behaviours?

Challenging behaviours, or behaviours of concern, are behaviours of such intensity, frequency, or duration that the physical safety of the participant, or others, is placed in serious jeopardy. They may also be behaviours which are likely to seriously limit or deny access to the use of ordinary community facilities. These behaviours can be a significant barrier to academic, social, and emotional success in the environments the participant is a part of.

Behaviour Support & Restrictive Practices

A restrictive practice refers to any practice or intervention that has the effect of restricting the rights or freedom of movement of a person with a disability. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support) Rules (2018) certain restrictive practices are subject to regulation. A practice is regulated if it is, or involves, seclusion, chemical restraint (eg. routine medication, PRN medication), mechanical restraint (eg. harnesses, buckle covers), physical restraint, and environmental restraint (eg. locked cupboards/doors/gates). Our Behaviour Support Practitioners will always work with you to identify ways to phase out these practices while still maintaining everyone’s safety.

The Behaviour Support Process

The Behaviour Support Practitioner will work with you, and those closest to the participant, to gather information, create an interim plan, implement strategies and gather data before completing a comprehensive behaviour support plan. This process can take 6 – 12 months with the interim plan, including analysis of the function of behaviours, delivered within six weeks.
